Chef Som

Jing Jing TourWith a story woven with colourful threads of travel, self-discovery, and a passion for food, Chef Jutamas Theantae, better known as Som, is a renowned figure amongst culinary enthusiasts in Bangkok. Known for her unique flair and originality, she was the culinary creative heart and soul behind the successful Karmakamet Diner and Karmakamet Conveyance, both celebrated dining destinations that unfortunately succumbed to the pressures of the pandemic. Yet, as a testament to Chef Som's resilience, this setback became just another chapter in her journey of transformation and growth.
Born with an independent spirit, Chef Som dreamt of running her own restaurant from a young age. Before realising this ambition, however, she set out to explore the world, immersing herself in diverse cultures, lifestyles, and most importantly, cuisines. It was in India, where she lived for six years studying art and nurturing her burgeoning interest in cooking, that she began to shape her culinary identity. Later, she would travel to America, where she cut her teeth in the demanding kitchens of San Francisco's esteemed restaurants, climbing the ladder from scrubbing grills to acquiring the precision of classical techniques.
Chef Som's culinary philosophy took root in these experiences, guided by an appreciation for local produce and a dedication to creating food that stirred powerful emotions.

“Like a painting at a museum, when you really look at it and absorb it, you experience it in your own way, with your own interpretation. This is using your visual senses to stimulate the art, but in this case, we use taste as a form of experiencing art"

Resilient in the face of adversity and imbued with a deep-seated passion for food, Chef Som returned to Thailand, devoting her time to honing her craft in diverse locales and sharing her knowledge as a teacher at the respected Vatel School of Hotel Management.

A Bygone Era

Embodying a revolutionary vision for fine-dining, Karmakamet Conveyance offers an unparalleled culinary adventure. It exists to defy expectations and disrupt the conventional, curating a stage for the audacious creations of Chef Jutamas Theantae, better known as Som.

One of Bangkok's best kept secrets, Karmakamet Diner is a romantic, yet somewhat secret world which combines unique decor with plenty of creative cuisine, showcasing the talents of Chef and restaurant co-founder Jutamas Theantae, Som, who utilises stints with prestigious Relais and Chateaux properties to display her fabulous French-styled cuisine with an Asian twist.

A Chance Visit

Synonymous with the soul of Bangkok's culinary landscape, Chef Som was the mastermind behind the kitchens of two of the city's most loved establishments - Karmakamet Diner and Karmakamet Conveyance. Their unexpected closure due to the unyielding pandemic was not just a personal loss for Chef Som, but left a void in the heart of the city's gastronomic scene.
Yet, from the ashes of this loss arose a new beginning in the form of the tranquility of Hua Hin. Chef Som found an enchanting heritage house by the serene Khao Tao beach. Captivated by its timeless charm and the soothing rhythm of the sea, she transformed this place into a culinary retreat. This new haven marries the allure of the old world with modern sophistication, offering guests not just a meal, but a memorable journey into Chef Som's world of inventive cuisine.
This....is Som’s Table

Som's Table

Whilst Karmakamet Diner was more romantic French-styled cuisine with an Asian twist and Karmakamet Conveyance was an unparalleled culinary adventure in the finest of fine dining, Som's Table is a more casual approach.

“During these challenging times, I have decided to take the opportunity to transform my cooking into something more casual and comforting, with the freedom to create exciting ‘Scrumptious Carte Blanche’ daily menus that are affordable and approachable."

Guests can indulge in their favourite wines and cocktails on the verdant front lawn, appreciating the calming sea view.
The dining concept at Som's Table is 'Carte Blanche', with a menu that evolves daily or weekly, dictated by Chef Som's creativity and the availability of fresh produce. Dishes resonate with warmth and familiarity, designed to be shared while maintaining Chef Som's professional expertise and unique flair. Complementing these meals is an exquisite winelist, carefully curated by Chef Som herself to augment the overall dining experience. There are wines from Thailand's award-winning GranMonte Estate as well as other producers.

We Know Hua Hin

The Som's Table Experience

Since opening its doors in late 2021, Som's Table has overcome initial mixed reviews to become a sought-after destination for Bangkokians, Hua Hin locals, and a cavalcade of celebrities and bloggers. It is particularly beloved by serious foodies, who find irresistible allure in Chef Som's seemingly casual but intrinsically complex dishes.
In Chef Som's words, "I opened Som's Table as something more casual and comforting, with the freedom to create an exciting daily Carte Blanche, A La Carte menu that is friendly and approachable."
Offering a mesmerising beachside setting, innovative cuisine and the opportunity for private bookings, Som's Table invites you to experience the joy of communal dining in a breathtaking locale.

Innovation

Chef Som’s cooking style is all about mixing simplicity with surprise. Her inventive dishes may look casual, but each one carries her unique touch. That means a complex play of flavours beneath the surface, combining the freshness of top-quality seafood and cuts of meat with a range of fresh herbs and spices. Her homemade breads, pastries and hand-rolled pasta have quickly become favourites among food lovers who visit Som's Table.
Take her Galletti pasta salad as an example. It brings together perfectly al dente Galletti pasta, homemade ricotta, sweet basil and organic tomatoes to create a taste that's both balanced and bursting with flavour. A sprinkling of parmesan and fleur de sel adds a further layer to the taste experience. This isn't just a pasta salad; it's a demonstration of how Chef Som uses her creativity and love for fresh ingredients to create dishes that leave a lasting impression.

Creativity

Chef Som’s dishes may appear simply casual but everything has her unique, special touches, meaning underlying complexity in flavours, with sauces made from scratch, on top of an endless choice the freshest produce.
Take Chef Som's unique approach to Surf & Turf. Spanking fresh calamari and wagyu flank with eggplant caviar, parsley butter, mash, a buttermilk biscuit and a celery, apple and grape coleslaw with a zingy vinaigrette.
This is the type of food which epitomises Chef Som's approach to food.
